Alessandra Sulpy is a 27 year old painter and educator, having taught drawing and painting at universities in Pennsylvania, Utah, Indiana and Florence, Italy. While originally from NJ, Alessandra attended the Maryland Institute College of Art for her BFA in Painting, and Indiana University for her MFA.
For the past few years, Alessandra has been creating an imaginary world peripheral to ours where the basic structure of life and vitality is redefined. While many of her paintings are tongue-in-cheek or mischievous, they express an interest in what occurs, that which really lives, behind a turned back.
In Sulpy's oil paintings, humans and objects do not follow typical roles of our reality, and often their characteristics blur together. An interest in humanity caught in a falsified existence: uncomfortable poses in yearbooks, mannequins, dolls, vintage cheesecake pornography, dated trinkets. These beings resemble humans, yet no longer reflect humanity. Conversely, the objects in the paintings typically take on a greater personality than mere objects often these are toys, souvenirs, and cheap doodads that are typically cast off over time. It’s the blending of these two ideas that creates what Alessandra call the "Chimera", a sentient entity with a spark of life. Their plane of existence is Sulpy's peripheral world; a mostly jocular (but sometimes spooky) place inhabited by beings between identities.
Alessandra, on her work:
"In each body of work, my ultimate goal is to show the atypical beauty or winsome characteristics of oft forgotten items or places, and to treat these objects to new vivacity."
Alessandra currently lives in the Pittsburgh area with 2 cats and a brand new husband.
