Shawn Roberts, an Art Institute of Pittsburgh alum, 2003, returns to our city after some very successful exhibits and world travels. Roberts's work has been featured in exhibitions in Chicago, Buffalo, NY, LA and France. Roberts continues to gain momentum in his work through the use of complicated personal mythology and fables. His use of soft form and color and his ease of manipulating light and dimension reorganizes his characters (both human and nonhuman) from flat and cartoony icons to deeply stoic figures caught in the last moments before the next eye movement. Subtle cartoon violence becomes oddly visceral. And the line between half joking and deadly serious is just a small bite away. With his solo exhibition, Consumed, Shawn explores ideas of hunger, necessity, excess, starvation, and indulgence. The viewer will not leave with an empty stomach.
