The Gallery 4 is so pleased to welcome Scott Hove to Pittsburgh! Scott Hove a self-taught mixed media sculptor born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. Though he has displayed a variety of works in a multitude of galleries along the west coast, Scott is probably best known for his elaborate cake sculptures and installations. Hove has garnered notoriety with his own gallery, "Cakeland" in Oakland, CA - an entire space, floor to ceiling, decorated with delicate precision to resemble a monstrous walk through confection. It's not often that you get to walk into a world of cake.

His unique medium employs an incredibly refined use of cake decorating tools and techniques to produce hyper realistic and downright tasty looking desserts. The cakes are further amped beyond the intricacies of the icing as ferocious taxidermy elements, such as horns, teeth, tongues and spikes invoke an immediate visceral response from the viewer. Hove manipulates this dichotomy between an object that is both beautiful and delicious and also predatory and confrontational; the cake is inedible, but the idea of fierce hunger is reflected in the viewer as well as the sculpture.

Scott continues to elucidate upon these countervailing ideas with his newest works, frosted assault weaponry: “For this series of sculptures, I have chosen to give the hyper-masculinized aesthetic of the assault weapon a forced-feminization in the form of pretty cake decoration, and in the process deconstructed the paranoia aesthetic. " A call-to-arms for sweet violence or an irresistible celebration of just desserts? Either way, it becomes brutally clear that one shouldn't be too quick to run a finger through the frosting; you might not get it back!

The Gallery 4 is committed to redefining the nature of a conventional gallery. We feature works from a variety of national artists and local talent. We also carry a variety of limited edition toys and clothing. Fine art should be within the reach of everyone, and at The Gallery 4 we are making this a reality.
