The Gallery 4 is pleased to welcome Gabe Felice. Gabe Felice is a Pittsburgh based painter and illustrator. Many of you are probably familiar with his colorful, iconic artwork through his various interior and outdoor murals which decorate the city. Gabe discovered drawing at a young age, while learning to write the alphabet. Though not formally trained in fine art, Gabe received a Commercial Design Degree in 1999 from the Central Technology Center. Shortly after graduating, Gabe began to pursue painting seriously, while traveling across the country. Established at The Southside Brew House (Pittsburgh's premiere Artist Residency), Felice continues to create his vivid, kaleidoscope figures and thoughtscapes rendered richly in acrylic, enamel, and ink on canvas or salvaged metal and wood. Working organically, with no direction or concept in mind, Felice begins with any tool or medium which is on hand and usually adds 4 to 10 layers of various colors and patterns before the true direction of the pieces revealed. A seasoned exhibitor, Felice's well-associated works have been showcased in myriad art spaces and events in Pittsburgh (his works featured recently at RAW Artists Pittsburgh).
Attending Felice's shows, there seems a definite aspect of "Outsider Art" in his pieces and installations - Not only in the stylistic technique or materials, but also in the distinct thought structure involved; Something "outside", beyond. It seems natural - Always having an interest in parapsychology and the limitless mind, Felice has intentionally fused and infused his creative process with Clairvoyance, Extra-Sensory Perception, and Psychometry. "Using these elements on a daily basis with the creative process becomes second nature after a while - forming a bonding element of self-made rules, cylcles /patterns, & wisdom," Felice states confidently.
This Fusion (which Felice identifies as *Psyence* a unique alignment of light, movement, frequency; and sometimes magic[!] )lead to an interactive installation titled, "The Magical Psychic T - Shirt" & "Psychic Drawings" which has been performed in Pittsburgh, Chicago, and Brooklyn so far. Utilizing a method referred to as Psychometry (a form of extra- sensory perception characterized by the ability to make relevant associations from an object through physical contact with that object and it's energy field - transferring subtle waves of information.) Participants are invited to hold an object of their choosing for a few minutes. During this time, subtle energies are transferred into the object. "After the object is placed into my hand, I begin to translate the energy into colors, images and phrases through the act of painting and drawing." Intriguing!
This particular *Magic* (which Felice interprets as a combination of Intent and Will), is evident in the works presented here in "Trip In / On Neon" While combining the creative process with clairvoyance, "Trip In / On Neon" aims to identify and portray specific brain waves that are consistent with the elements of psychic abilities and translate them into paintings, drawings, and objects with echoes of experimental discovery.
Skepticism aside, There's no doubt that Felice's unique mind is obliged to create beautiful, thought provoking works. In that regard, his introspections are indeed transferred and shared - to the delight of the lucky viewer. Magical.
Felice, on the works -
"One concept I associate with 'Trip In / On Neon' deals with the capture and study of an element which exists in the early stage of experimentation within my process itself - where the visual atmospheres are still unraveling through colors and lines have only begun to form. This moment in the process occurs when entering into the Alpha Brain Wave state (9 - 14hz) while creative visualization is corresponding with the subconscious mind."
